Pedal through parks, along cycle paths, or around the neighbourhood — cycling builds fitness, independence, and road awareness while giving children a sense of freedom and adventure on two wheels.

The Essentials

  • Set the seat height so your leg is almost fully extended with a slight bend at the knee when the pedal is at its lowest point, since a seat that is too low forces your knees to overwork and a seat that is too high makes it hard to reach the pedals smoothly.
  • Check that your brakes engage firmly before every ride, and practice using both brakes together rather than just the front one, since grabbing only the front brake hard can pitch you over the handlebars.
  • Look ahead at where you want to go rather than down at your front wheel, since your bike naturally steers toward wherever your eyes are focused, and looking down often causes you to drift or wobble.
  • Shift to a lower gear before you reach a hill rather than after you start climbing, since shifting under heavy pedaling strain can cause the chain to skip or slip off.
  • Always wear a properly fitted helmet, since falls are common even for experienced riders and a helmet is the single most effective protection against serious head injury.
  • Signal your turns and stops with your hand, and check behind you before changing lanes or position on the road, since drivers and other cyclists cannot anticipate your next move without a clear signal.
