Min duration 30 min.
Cost Low
Environment Indoor

Play one-on-one in a four-walled court, driving a small rubber ball against the front wall and racing to retrieve your opponent's shots — squash is one of the most physically demanding racquet sports, rewarding quick reflexes and tactical placement.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Rally starts with a serve hit above the service line into the front wall, landing in the opponent's back quarter of the court.
  2. Players alternate hitting the ball against the front wall (it can also touch the side or back walls first) before it bounces twice on the floor.
  3. A shot is a fault if it hits the floor before the front wall, goes out of bounds, or the ball bounces twice before being returned.
  4. Points are scored on every rally (regardless of who served) in most modern scoring — first to 11 points, win by 2, wins the game; matches are best of 5 games.
  5. Between shots, players return to a central "T" position on the court to cover the next return efficiently.

Good to know

  • Book a court at a local sports centre or squash club — most rent racquets and balls for beginners, so you don't need your own gear to try it.
  • Wear non-marking court shoes (required at most clubs) and eye protection is strongly recommended — the ball moves fast in a small enclosed space.
  • It's a demanding cardio workout even at a casual pace — start with shorter games and build up stamina over a few sessions.
  • Many sports centres and squash clubs run separate groups and beginner courses for kids and teens — a great way to learn the basics under a coach before playing on your own.
