Environment Outdoor

Paddle through rivers, lakes, or coastal waters in a sleek kayak — an accessible water sport that builds upper-body strength and balance while rewarding you with access to landscapes only reachable by water.

The Essentials

Sit in the kayak with your knees slightly bent and braced against the hull, and always wear a properly fitted life jacket. Hold the paddle with hands shoulder-width apart, knuckles roughly aligned with the blade angles. To paddle forward, rotate your torso and plant the blade near your feet, then pull it back toward your hip while rotating the other way for the next stroke — power comes from your core and torso rotation, not just your arms. To turn, use a wider sweeping stroke on one side, or a reverse stroke on the opposite side to pivot faster. Keep your weight centered and relaxed to maintain balance, and practice a wet exit (sliding out of the kayak underwater) in calm, shallow water before heading out so you're prepared if you capsize.
