Glide across an ice rink on blades — ice skating builds balance, lower-body strength, and graceful movement, whether you're exploring a public session, learning spins, or simply enjoying the rink atmosphere.

The Essentials

How to get started

  1. Rent skates that fit snugly, with ankle support, and lace them tight up to the top hook.
  2. Start at the rink wall — stand up, bend your knees slightly, and get used to the feel of the blades.
  3. Practice the "marching" step: walk in place, then push off gently to glide forward.
  4. Keep your weight centered over your feet and look ahead, not down.
  5. Learn to stop with the snowplow technique: turn your toes inward and push your heels outward.
  6. Practice falling safely (crouch down low) and getting back up by kneeling first, then standing.
