Walking Football

Walking Football

Age 50+ yrs.
Safety support Not required
Min duration 45 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Outdoor

Play a modified version of association football where running is prohibited — all players must walk at all times — keeping the passing, tactics, and team play of the beautiful game while eliminating the high-impact collisions and sprints that can cause injury in later life.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Running, jogging, or sprinting is not allowed for any player, including the goalkeeper outside the box — offenders concede a free kick to the other team.
  • Matches are usually played on a smaller pitch with 5-a-side or 6-a-side teams, often with no offside rule to keep the game flowing.
  • Tackling is normally two-footed and non-contact; sliding tackles are banned to protect players' joints.
  • The ball must stay below head height for most shots and passes — deliberately heading the ball is often restricted or banned.
  • Games are shorter than regular football, typically two 20-minute halves.

Tips

  • Focus on positioning and passing accuracy since you can't outrun opponents — reading the game becomes more important than pace.
  • Wear proper football boots or trainers with good ankle support, since the walking pace still involves sudden changes of direction.
  • Warm up your hips and knees beforehand — the sport is popular with older adults, so joint mobility matters more than speed.
  • Communicate constantly with teammates to create passing lanes, since nobody can chase down a bad pass.
