Rally a shuttlecock over a net with lightweight rackets — badminton is fast, fun, and playable in any backyard or sports hall, building reflexes, coordination, and competitive spirit with minimal equipment.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Stand on opposite sides of a net (about 1.55 m high) and hit a shuttlecock back and forth over it using a lightweight racket.
  2. Serve underarm diagonally into the opponent's service box to start each rally.
  3. Return the shuttlecock before it touches the ground, on your side of the net, in one hit.
  4. A rally ends when the shuttlecock lands out of bounds, hits the ground, or a player fails to return it — the winner of the rally scores a point and serves next.
  5. Games are usually played to 21 points, and you must win by at least 2 points.
  6. Play either singles (1 vs 1, using the narrower court) or doubles (2 vs 2, using the full width) — win the match by taking two out of three games.
