Splash and glide in a public pool, lake, or aquatic centre — swimming builds water confidence, develops full-body fitness, and is one of the most valuable life skills you can pass on.

The Essentials

Enter the water gradually to let your body adjust to the temperature, and always swim in a supervised or otherwise safe area. For freestyle, the most common stroke, extend one arm forward while the other pulls back through the water, alternating in a steady rhythm, with legs kicking from the hips in a relaxed flutter. Turn your head to the side to breathe every few strokes, exhaling underwater so you're ready to inhale as your mouth clears the surface. Keep your body as horizontal as possible to reduce drag, and start with short distances, resting as needed — endurance builds gradually with practice.
