Blend yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage in partner practices where one person acts as a base and lifts the other into inverted poses — acro yoga demands trust, body awareness, and communication, turning a solo practice into a playful physical conversation.

The Essentials

  • Work with a partner and decide on roles: the base lies on the ground supporting the flyer with their feet or hands, the flyer balances in the air, and a spotter stays nearby ready to help if something goes wrong.
  • Start with simple, low poses like the base lying on their back with knees bent, feet planted on the flyer's hips, so the flyer can practice balancing close to the ground before attempting anything higher.
  • Communicate clearly and constantly, using simple verbal cues to signal when you are ready to lift, hold, or come down, since acro-yoga depends on trust and timing between partners.
  • Keep your core engaged and your movements slow and controlled rather than sudden, since smooth transitions are safer and easier for your partner to follow.
  • Always have a plan for how to exit a pose safely, and practice controlled dismounts before trying to hold a position for long.
  • Build up gradually from ground-level poses to standing and higher balances only once you and your partner feel confident and coordinated together.
