Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Players pass a ball around a court and shoot it through a high ring without moving while holding it — a fast, skillful team sport demanding quick thinking, spatial awareness, and tight teamwork.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Stay within your assigned position's designated area of the court, since each of the seven positions (GS, GA, WA, C, WD, GD, GK) is restricted to specific thirds and stepping outside gives the ball to the other team.
  • Hold the ball for no more than three seconds before passing or shooting, since exceeding this time limit results in a turnover.
  • Take no more than one step while holding the ball, and land on one foot at a time when catching it, since footwork violations are one of the most common ways possession changes hands.
  • Stay at least 0.9 meters (3 feet) away from the player holding the ball when defending, since closer contact counts as obstruction and gives away a free pass.
  • Only Goal Shooters and Goal Attackers may shoot for goal, and only from within the shooting circle, since attempts from other positions or outside the circle don't count even if they go in.

Tips

  • Practice pivoting on your landing foot immediately after catching the ball, since this lets you protect the ball from defenders and buy time to find a pass without committing a footwork violation.
  • Communicate constantly with teammates using calls and hand signals, since netball's position restrictions mean players can't freely roam to support each other visually.
  • Work on quick, sharp passes over long, high ones, since long passes are easier for defenders to intercept while the ball is in the air.
  • Build specific fitness for your position, since attacking positions need speed and agility for cutting into space while defensive positions benefit more from vertical jump and reach.
  • Study your assigned defender's movement patterns during a game, since most netball defense relies on anticipating cuts rather than raw speed, and predictable attackers get intercepted repeatedly.
