Two teams battle in the pool, treading water while passing and shooting a ball into the opposing net — a demanding mix of swimming endurance, brute strength, and tactical play.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Two teams of seven (six field players plus a goalkeeper) try to score by throwing the ball into the opposing goal.
  • Players may not touch the pool bottom or hold the ball underwater to keep it from an opponent.
  • The ball can be passed or dribbled by pushing it forward while swimming, but a player may only hold it with one hand.
  • Each half consists of timed quarters, and possession changes after a goal, a foul, or when the shot clock expires.
  • Common fouls include holding, sinking, or pulling back an opponent not holding the ball.

Tips

  • Build strong eggbeater kick technique first, since staying high in the water without touching bottom is essential.
  • Practice one-handed catching and passing on land before trying it in the pool.
  • Wear a water polo cap with ear guards to protect against accidental hits.
  • Work on peripheral vision so you can track both the ball and defenders at once.
  • Start with small-sided games to get more touches on the ball while learning positioning.
