Environment Outdoor

Make simple wooden or tin-can stilts with rope handles and learn to walk in a straight line — a classic circus skill that demands balance and perseverance, and produces enormous satisfaction once mastered.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Cut two lengths of sturdy wood or use tin cans with holes punched near the rim for beginner stilts
  • Attach footholds or threaded rope handles at a comfortable height, low to the ground when starting out
  • Stand next to a wall or have a spotter hold your hands for your first few tries
  • Step onto the footholds, keep your body upright, and look straight ahead rather than down at your feet
  • Take small, steady steps and practice standing still before trying to walk longer distances

Tips

  • Start on grass or a soft surface in case you lose balance and step off
  • Keep your knees slightly bent and your core engaged for better control
  • Raise the footholds gradually as your balance improves, rather than starting high
  • Wear closed shoes with good grip so your feet don't slip off the platforms
