Cold Water Dipping

Cold Water Dipping

Min number of participants 1
Age 18+ yrs.
Safety support Recommended
Min duration 15 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Outdoor

Deliberately immerse yourselves in a cold river, lake, sea, or outdoor pool for a short bracing plunge, triggering an endorphin rush, heightened alertness, and a shared sense of exhilarating accomplishment.

The Essentials

  • Enter slowly and control your breathing — the cold shock response peaks in the first 30-60 seconds and passes if you stay calm
  • Never dip alone in open water; go with a partner who can help if you struggle to get out
  • Start with short dips of a minute or less and build tolerance gradually over weeks, not all at once
  • Warm up naturally afterward with dry clothes and movement rather than a hot shower, which can cause dizziness
  • Avoid cold dipping if you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, or are pregnant, without checking with a doctor first
