Paddle out, read the waves, and ride the swell standing on a board — surfing demands balance, timing, and ocean awareness, offering a deeply physical and meditative connection to the sea.

The Essentials

Practice popping up to a standing position on the sand first — from lying on the board, push up with your arms and jump your feet under you in one motion, landing in a crouched stance with feet roughly shoulder-width apart. Paddle out past the breaking waves lying flat on the board, timing your paddling to duck under or over incoming whitewater. Watch for an approaching swell, turn the board toward shore, and paddle hard as it lifts you, then pop up in one smooth motion as you feel the wave catch the board. Keep your knees bent and your gaze forward toward where you want to go, using small weight shifts to steer, and always be aware of other surfers around you to avoid collisions.
