Catching and riding breaking ocean waves using nothing but your own body — no board needed. Time your swim into the wave's energy and let it sweep you toward shore in a rush of speed.

The Essentials

  • Pick a beach with a lifeguard on duty and check the surf report for wave size and rip current warnings.
  • Watch the wave pattern for a few minutes before entering the water to time when the best waves break.
  • As a wave approaches, swim hard toward shore and extend one arm forward, riding the wave's face on your chest.
  • Keep your chin up and arms forward to help steer, and hold your breath in case the wave rolls you over.
  • Exit through a channel rather than fighting through incoming waves, and start in smaller surf until you know your limits.
