Harnessing wind power with a large controllable kite to glide and leap across water on a board — an exhilarating sport requiring balance, coordination, and growing confidence together.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Take lessons from a certified instructor before your first session; kitesurfing has a steep learning curve and real safety risks.
  • Always wear a properly fitted harness, a helmet, and an impact vest.
  • Check wind conditions and tides before heading out, and never ride in offshore winds that could blow you away from shore.
  • Know and use the quick-release safety system on your kite so you can depower it instantly in an emergency.
  • Give right of way to riders on starboard tack and keep a safe distance from swimmers, boats, and other kiters.

Tips

  • Master kite control on land, called kite flying, before attempting to get on the board.
  • Start with a smaller, more stable kite in light wind conditions rather than a large kite in strong wind.
  • Learn to body drag through the water before trying to stand up on the board; it builds the feel for controlling the kite.
  • Check your gear, lines, and harness for wear before every session, since a failure at speed can be dangerous.
  • Ride with a buddy or in a spot with other kitesurfers nearby in case you need help.
