Play on a glass-walled enclosed court with a solid paddle racquet and a depressurised ball, using the walls as part of the game — padel is one of the world's fastest-growing racquet sports, easier to learn than tennis but with comparable tactical depth.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Serve underarm and diagonally from behind the service line, hitting the ball below waist height, since padel serves have different requirements than tennis serves.
  • Let the ball bounce once on your side before returning it, and after the bounce you may play the ball off the surrounding glass or mesh walls, since using the walls is a core part of padel strategy, not a fault.
  • Never volley a serve, since the receiver must let the served ball bounce before hitting it back.
  • Score points using the same 15-30-40-game system as tennis, played in doubles only, since padel does not have a singles format in standard play.

Tips

  • Position yourselves at the net together with your partner whenever possible, since padel rewards net play far more than baseline rallies due to the enclosed court.
  • Use the walls to extend defensive rallies rather than panicking when a ball is out of easy reach, since a controlled shot off the back glass can turn defense into an attacking opportunity.
  • Communicate constantly with your partner about who takes which ball, since the smaller court and glass walls create fast exchanges where hesitation leads to collisions or missed shots.
  • Practice the bandeja and vibora overhead shots instead of smashing every lob, since a controlled defensive overhead keeps you at the net instead of getting pulled out of position.
