Combine different grape varieties and vintages in a glass, tweaking ratios until you craft a blend that tastes entirely your own — part science, part artistry, all delicious experimentation.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Taste each base wine on its own first, noting acidity, tannin, fruit and body before combining anything.
  • Start with small measured samples, such as 10 milliliters of each wine, so ratios are easy to scale up later.
  • Blend two wines first in simple ratios like 90 to 10, 80 to 20 and so on, tasting after each change.
  • Add a third wine only once the two wine blend tastes balanced, adjusting in small increments.
  • Record every ratio you try so you can recreate or refine your favorite blend afterward.
  • Let the finished blend rest for a few minutes before a final taste, since flavors settle after mixing.

Tips

  • Blend wines from the same general style family first, since wildly different wines are harder to balance.
  • Use clean glasses for every sample so leftover residue does not skew the taste.
  • Trust your own palate over any formula, since personal taste is the whole point of the exercise.
  • Keep portions small while experimenting to avoid wasting wine on combinations that do not work.
