Explore new rooms one tile at a time and read each room's card aloud as it's revealed, since the house is built randomly during play and half the fun and tension comes from not knowing what lies beyond the next door. Track each character's four stats, Might, Speed, Knowledge, and Sanity, carefully as they shift up or down on the cards you draw, since reaching the bottom of any stat track can trigger a critical stat event that seriously hurts or even removes your character from the game. Keep an eye on the Omen cards you draw and roll the haunt die every time one appears, since accumulating enough Omen cards while rolling low increases the chance the haunt begins, and forgetting this roll skips the game's central twist. Once the haunt triggers, stop and look up the matching scenario in the Traitor's Tome or Secrets book using the omen card and room combination, since guessing the scenario or misreading which player becomes the traitor derails the entire second half of the game. Don't assume the game stays cooperative all the way through, since one player will secretly or openly turn against the rest partway through and the remaining players need to adapt their strategy immediately once that happens. Keep the character sheets and item cards nearby for quick reference, since many rooms and events require checking whether a stat is high or low enough to succeed at a roll, and slow lookups break the pacing during tense moments.
