A quick pen-and-paper duel on a 3x3 grid — take turns marking X's and O's, trying to line up three in a row while blocking your opponent. Perfect for killing a few idle minutes anywhere.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Draw a 3x3 grid on paper (or use a board/app).
  • Two players take turns marking X and O in empty squares, X going first.
  • The first to line up three of their own marks in a row, column, or diagonal wins.
  • If all nine squares fill up with no winner, the game is a draw.

Tips

  • Take the center square first when possible — it's part of the most winning lines.
  • Watch for your opponent's two-in-a-row and block it before completing your own.
  • Play several rounds and swap who goes first, since going first gives a slight edge.
  • Try playing on a napkin or scrap paper — it's a perfect filler for a wait at a restaurant.
