What to expect
Gymnastics is usually taught in age- and level-based classes at a dedicated gym club:
- A warm-up of stretching and light cardio to prepare joints and muscles.
- Rotating through stations — floor tumbling, beam, bars, and vault — practicing individual skills under a coach's supervision.
- Skills progress in a set order: rolls and cartwheels first, then handstands and bridges, then more advanced tumbling and apparatus work as strength and confidence build.
- A cool-down with stretching to maintain flexibility and prevent injury.
Classes typically run 45-90 minutes, once or twice a week. Beginners don't need any prior experience — coaches build skills progressively and never push a student past what they're ready for.
Good to know
- Wear a leotard or fitted athletic clothing — nothing loose that could catch on equipment. Bare feet or gymnastics slippers are standard; no shoes on the mats.
- Choose a club affiliated with your national gymnastics federation for qualified, insured coaching.
- Consistency matters more than intensity — steady weekly practice builds strength and skill far faster than occasional long sessions.
