Drive coloured wooden balls through a sequence of hoops using a long-handled mallet, using cannons to send rivals out of position while routing your own ball around the lawn — croquet rewards strategic thinking and delicate touch in a genteel outdoor game with a famously competitive underbelly.

The Essentials

Each player or team chooses a colored ball and takes turns hitting it with a mallet, trying to send it through a series of hoops set out on the lawn in a specific order. Strike the ball by swinging the mallet like a pendulum between your legs or to the side, aiming to control both direction and distance rather than hitting as hard as possible. If your ball passes cleanly through the correct hoop in the correct direction, you earn an extra stroke. If your ball hits another player's ball, you get a bonus turn where you can place your ball next to theirs and strike it to send their ball off course, a tactic called a croquet shot. The first player or team to send their ball through every hoop in the correct sequence and then hit the finishing peg wins the game.
