Drop the rope and surf the endless wave created by a motorboat's hull, carving turns and throwing tricks just metres behind the boat — wakesurfing is the ultimate way to spend an afternoon on the water.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Start in the water holding the rope in a crouched position with the board strapped to your feet.
  • Let the boat's pull bring you up to standing as the board planes on the surface.
  • Once up on the wave, drop the rope and use the pull of the wake itself to keep surfing.
  • Stay in the sweet spot just behind the boat where the wave is steepest and cleanest.
  • Carve gentle turns across the wave face to build speed and control.

Tips

  • Wear a properly fitted life jacket and never surf without a spotter watching for other boats.
  • Keep a safe distance from the boat's exhaust to avoid inhaling fumes while surfing close behind.
  • Bend your knees and keep your weight centered over the board for balance.
  • Practice standing up in calm water before attempting a full session behind the boat.
  • Book a lesson with a certified instructor if you are new to being pulled up by a boat.
