Set up cushions, hula hoops, stepping stones, and garden furniture as a course to race through — a high-energy activity that challenges coordination and problem-solving using whatever you have at hand.

The Essentials

Plan a simple loop of five or six stations using items you already have, such as cones or buckets to weave around, a hula hoop to jump into and out of, a low bench or plank to balance-walk across, a rope laid on the ground to hop over side to side, and a laundry basket to toss bean bags into, since a familiar layout keeps setup quick and the course easy to repeat. Space the stations far enough apart that kids running between them will not collide, and keep the surface clear of hard or sharp objects, since falls are common when kids move fast between stations. Mark a clear start and finish line with chalk or tape so everyone knows exactly where the course begins and ends. Time each run with a stopwatch or phone timer if kids enjoy competing against their own best time, since a friendly personal record often keeps interest going longer than a single walkthrough. Adjust station difficulty for younger or older kids by shortening balance beams or lowering hurdle heights, since a course that is too hard early on can discourage kids from finishing. Do a walkthrough yourself first at a slow pace to check for wobbly items or trip hazards before letting kids run it at full speed.
