One player is a silent ghost sending cryptic dream-card visions to psychic investigators who must identify the correct suspect, location, and weapon that led to the ghost's murder.

The Essentials

Rules

  • The ghost player may not speak or use gestures to communicate during the game, since all clues must be conveyed exclusively through the surreal vision cards they play.
  • Each round, the ghost gives every psychic one vision card matching a suspect, location, or weapon combination, since psychics must guess based only on the cards' imagery, not verbal hints.
  • Psychics have a limited number of rounds (typically 7) to correctly identify their combination before the game ends in failure, since running out of rounds means the mystery goes unsolved.
  • Once a psychic locks in their final guess for suspect, location, and weapon, it cannot be changed, since the vision phase for that psychic is considered complete.
  • In the final round, all psychics who solved their combinations must agree on which of them actually committed the murder, guided only by one last vision from the ghost, since a wrong final guess loses the game even if earlier combinations were correct.

Tips

  • As the ghost, pick vision cards with the strongest visual overlap to your target cards rather than the most artistically striking ones, since psychics need surprising but decodable image connections, not just pretty art.
  • As a psychic, discuss your interpretations out loud with other psychics, since collective brainstorming often surfaces symbolic connections one player would miss alone.
  • Keep a small notebook of which cards you've eliminated for each of your three categories, since Mysterium's card pool is large and memory fades across seven rounds.
  • Don't overthink early rounds, since the ghost usually saves the clearest, most direct visions for later rounds when time pressure is higher.
  • Play a full game before adding house rules or variants, since the base timing and clue-limit mechanics are tightly tuned for challenge and are easy to break by relaxing them too early.
