Recreate the War of the Ring from Tolkien's Middle-earth — one player commands the Free Peoples escorting the Fellowship to Mount Doom, while the other leads Sauron's armies in a race to conquer the West.

The Essentials

Rules

  • One player controls the Free Peoples, moving the hidden Fellowship toward Mount Doom while defending cities and raising armies; the other commands the Shadow armies of Sauron.
  • The Fellowship track lets the Free Peoples player move openly or hide the Ring-bearer's true position, at the cost of Corruption if revealed.
  • Each round both sides draw and play Event and Character cards, then take turns using Action Dice to move armies, muster troops, or advance the Fellowship.
  • The Shadow player wins by capturing enough Free People strongholds; the Free Peoples win if the Ring reaches Mount Doom or Sauron's forces are broken.
  • A full game typically takes two to four hours, so agree on a stopping point in advance if time is limited.

Tips

  • As the Free Peoples, don't rush the Fellowship blindly — sometimes hiding in the open with lower Corruption risk is safer than a fast dash.
  • As the Shadow, prioritize capturing key strongholds early to pressure the Free Peoples' card draws and reinforcements.
  • Read the Event cards carefully before playing them — many have conditional effects that only help under specific board states.
  • Track Corruption points closely; a Fellowship overwhelmed by Corruption can fail the mission even without being physically caught.
  • Play a shorter introductory scenario first if it's your group's first game, since the full campaign has many interacting rules.
