Running and belly-flopping down a long wet plastic mat laid out on the lawn, soaked with a hose and often soapy — a classic summer backyard game that turns any sunny afternoon into a slippery, laughing mess.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Lay a plastic tarp or slip-and-slide mat on flat grass, away from trees, fences, or hard surfaces.
  • Wet the surface thoroughly with a hose or sprinkler before anyone runs or dives onto it.
  • Take turns running and sliding feet- or belly-first, and clear the landing area before the next person goes.

Tips

  • Check for rocks, roots, or sprinkler heads under the tarp before laying it out.
  • Re-wet the slide every few turns since the surface dries out and gets sticky in the sun.
  • Add a little dish soap to the water for an extra-slippery, low-friction slide.
  • Watch younger kids closely, since running starts can lead to hard falls on wet grass.
