A classic family race game for two to four players — roll the dice, move your coloured tokens from home to the finish, and send rivals' pieces back to start whenever you land on them.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Each player's four tokens start in their home yard and must exit onto the main track by rolling a 6.
  • Move a token clockwise around the shared track by the number shown on the dice; landing exactly on an opponent's token sends it back to their home yard.
  • Landing on a star or safe square protects your token from being captured by opponents.
  • Rolling a 6 grants an extra roll, but rolling three 6s in a row forfeits your turn.
  • A token must reach the center of the board via its own colored home column, with an exact roll required to enter the final space.
  • The first player to get all four of their tokens into the center wins; some variants continue until all players finish for full rankings.

Tips

  • Prioritize getting tokens out of the home yard early, since you need a 6 to enter play and rolling one gives you options.
  • Try to move tokens onto safe squares whenever possible, especially when opponents' tokens are close behind.
  • Group two tokens on the same square to form a block, which some rule sets let you use to prevent opponents from passing.
  • Don't rush every token forward at once; keeping one token near the start can let you capture an opponent who lands nearby.
  • Track which squares are marked safe before starting, since safe-square rules vary between editions.
