A timeless strategy board game where two players outmaneuver each other across 64 squares — play a friend, challenge an AI, or sharpen your tactics by solving puzzles solo.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Set up 16 pieces per side on an 8×8 board: a row of 8 pawns in front, and behind them a rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook (queen on her own color).
  2. Players alternate turns, White moving first, each moving exactly one piece.
  3. Each piece type moves differently — pawns forward (capturing diagonally), rooks in straight lines, bishops diagonally, knights in an L-shape, the queen in any straight or diagonal line, and the king one square in any direction.
  4. Capture an opponent's piece by moving your own piece onto its square; the captured piece is removed from the board.
  5. "Check" is when the king is under direct attack — that player must move out of check immediately.
  6. The game ends in "checkmate" when a king is in check with no legal way to escape, or in a draw (stalemate, repetition, or insufficient material).
