One of the world's oldest strategy games — sow stones around a row of pits, capturing as many as possible in your store, in a deceptively simple yet deeply strategic two-player duel.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Each player owns the six small pits on their side of the board and the large store (Kalah) to their right.
  • On your turn, pick up all seeds from one of your own pits and drop one seed into each following pit going counter-clockwise, including your own store but skipping your opponent's store.
  • If your last seed lands in your own empty store, you get an extra turn.
  • If your last seed lands in an empty pit on your own side, you capture that seed plus all seeds in the opposite pit, placing them all in your store.
  • The game ends when one player's row of pits is completely empty; the other player then adds all remaining seeds in their pits to their own store.
  • The player with the most seeds in their store at the end wins.

Tips

  • Look for moves that land your last seed in your own store to chain extra turns together.
  • Watch for opportunities to leave a pit with exactly one seed on your side, since it sets up a capture on your next visible turn.
  • Avoid leaving pits with a single seed exposed late in the game, since your opponent can often capture them.
  • Count seeds carefully before committing to a move, since planning two or three moves ahead reveals capture opportunities you'd otherwise miss.
  • Emptying your row too early can end the game prematurely and hand your opponent leftover seeds, so balance offense with keeping seeds in play.
