Serve, spike, set, and dig with a team to keep the ball in play — volleyball builds explosive power, split-second reactions, and the communication and trust that only come from playing together.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Two teams of six (fewer for casual or beach volleyball) stand on opposite sides of a net and try to ground the ball on the opponent's side.
  2. Each team may touch the ball up to three times before sending it back over the net, and no player may hit it twice in a row.
  3. Serve the ball from behind the back line, over the net, into the opponent's court to start each rally.
  4. Common hits include the bump (forearm pass), the set (overhead fingertip push), and the spike (a hard downward attack near the net).
  5. A rally ends when the ball touches the ground, goes out of bounds, or a team commits a fault (like touching the net) — the winning team, or the serving team if it wins the rally, scores a point.
  6. Games are usually played to 25 points (win by 2), and a match is decided by winning the majority of sets, often best of five.
