Bring drawings to life frame by frame using free tools like FlipaClip or Krita — animation merges artistic skill with storytelling, producing short films that exist nowhere else but in your imagination.

The Essentials

  • Plan your sequence with a storyboard first, sketching out the key poses and camera angles before animating a single frame, since jumping straight into animation without a plan usually leads to wasted work.
  • Choose a technique that matches your resources and goals, such as frame-by-frame drawn animation, stop motion with physical objects, or digital puppet rigging in software, since each requires a different workflow and skill set.
  • Work in key poses first, establishing the most important moments of the motion, then fill in the frames between them, called in-betweens, to smooth out the movement rather than drawing every frame in sequence from start to finish.
  • Keep your movements grounded in real physics and timing, exaggerating slightly where needed for comedic or dramatic effect, since motion that ignores weight and momentum reads as stiff or unnatural.
  • Test your animation frequently by playing it back at low resolution, catching timing or spacing problems early rather than polishing details in a scene that does not work yet.
  • Export and review your final animation on the device or platform where it will actually be viewed, since color, timing, and detail can look different on a phone screen than on your working monitor.
