Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Tracing a path with a pencil through a printed maze of walls and passages, from a marked entrance to a marked exit, without crossing any walls or backtracking through dead ends.

The Essentials

Steps

  1. Scan the whole maze first to spot the general direction from entrance to exit before committing pencil to paper.
  2. Trace lightly at first, following one wall (always turning the same direction at junctions) until you find the way through.
  3. Mark dead ends with a small cross as you discover them, so you don't wander back into them.
  4. Once a working path is found, retrace it firmly and cleanly as the final solution.

Tips

  • The "always turn right" wall-following trick solves almost any simple maze without a map.
  • For complex mazes with loops, work backward from the exit too — meeting in the middle narrows the search.
