Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Learn to walk, trot, and canter in a riding school, developing communication and trust with your horse — equestrian sport builds posture, balance, and confidence while offering a bond with an animal partner.

The Essentials

  • Wear an ASTM/SEI-certified riding helmet and proper boots with a small heel every time you mount, even for a short walk.
  • Approach the horse from the side, near the shoulder, and speak calmly so it knows you're there before you touch it.
  • Keep your heels down and back straight; most balance problems come from gripping with the knees instead of the seat.
  • Learn to read the horse's ears and body language — pinned ears or a swishing tail are early warning signs to back off.
  • Start in a fenced arena with an instructor before attempting an open trail, even if you've ridden before at a different stable.
  • Always cool the horse down with a slow walk at the end of the session instead of dismounting straight from a trot or canter.
