Place your first piece in the corner of the board assigned to your color, since every player must start from their own corner and this rule anchors the whole game's structure. Make sure every new piece you place touches at least one piece of your own color only at the corners, never along a flat edge, since this corner-only touching rule is the core mechanic that makes Blokus different from simply filling in space. Play your largest pieces early rather than saving them for later, since as the board fills up there are fewer open corners available, and big pieces become impossible to place if you wait too long. Try to block opponents' corners while expanding your own territory, since limiting where rivals can legally place their next piece is often more valuable than simply claiming more open space for yourself. Watch the whole board, not just your own area, since a piece placed defensively on the other side of the board can cut off an opponent's expansion route long before it becomes an obvious problem. Keep track of which of your pieces remain unplaced as the game nears its end, since the final score subtracts points for every square left in your hand, making it worth placing even small, awkward pieces if you get the chance rather than holding onto them.
