Work together as a team of specialists to contain and cure four deadly diseases spreading across the globe — a fully cooperative board game where everyone wins or loses together.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Play cooperatively as a team against the game itself, since Pandemic has no player-versus-player element and everyone wins or loses together.
  • Draw two Player cards then resolve any Epidemic cards immediately, since Epidemics trigger a specific sequence (increase, infect, intensify) that changes the game's threat level in ways easy to misplay.
  • Keep your hand at seven Player cards or fewer at the end of your turn, discarding down if needed, since exceeding the hand limit is not allowed to carry into the next player's turn.
  • Lose the game immediately if any disease cube runs out while it should be placed, or if the Player deck runs out of cards, since these are the game's two failure conditions alongside letting outbreaks chain past eight.

Tips

  • Coordinate role abilities actively rather than playing in isolation, since each role (like the Medic or Scientist) is designed to combo with specific strategies the group should plan around together.
  • Treat outbreaks as the real threat more than individual infections, since a chain reaction of outbreaks (when a city already at three cubes gets infected again) escalates the infection rate and can spiral out of control quickly.
  • Build research stations in strategic locations before you desperately need one, since curing a disease requires discarding five matching city cards at a research station, and poor station placement wastes turns traveling.
  • Discuss the whole team's next several turns in advance rather than only your own, since Pandemic's difficulty comes from managing four diseases at once, which usually requires planning two or three moves ahead as a group.
