Play out the Cold War as the USA or USSR — place influence, trigger historical events via cards, and wrestle for global dominance across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas across ten tense turns.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Two players take the roles of the USA and the USSR, competing for influence across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Central America.
  • Each turn, players alternate playing cards to place influence markers, trigger historical events, or launch coup attempts against opposing influence.
  • Cards can be played for their event text (which may favor one side) or for their operations value; choosing correctly is the core tactical decision of the game.
  • The game is won by controlling regions to reach 20 victory points, by triggering a wildcard win condition (like nuclear war), or automatically after ten turns based on the score.

Tips

  • Learn the region scoring cards early — they drive most of the strategic tension and are worth memorizing before your first full game.
  • Don't play an opponent's event if you can avoid it; sometimes it's worth sacrificing operations points to deny them the effect.
  • Track the DEFCON level carefully — dropping to 1 ends the game in a loss for whoever caused it.
  • Expect your first game to take four or more hours; experienced players can finish in under two once familiar with the card deck.
  • Study a summary of the historical context behind the cards — knowing the real Cold War events makes the flavor text much more engaging.
