Cut coloured glass sheets, wrap the pieces in copper foil or lead came, and solder them into luminous panels — stained glass art is a craft where light is as much the material as the glass itself, producing works that change appearance through the day.

The Essentials

Steps

  • Choose a simple pattern and trace it onto glass, then cut each piece with a glass cutter and running pliers
  • Grind the edges smooth so pieces fit tightly against each other
  • Wrap each piece's edges in copper foil, then press the foil flat
  • Arrange the foiled pieces on the pattern and tack them together with dots of solder
  • Run a full solder bead along every seam on both sides, then add a hanging loop
  • Clean the finished panel with flux remover and polish the solder lines

Tips

  • Always wear safety glasses when cutting or scoring glass
  • Practice foiling and soldering on scrap glass before starting the real piece
  • Keep the soldering iron tip clean and tinned for smooth, even beads
  • Work in a well-ventilated space, since solder fumes can irritate the lungs
  • Start with a design that has few pieces and gentle curves rather than sharp points
