Use fallen branches, leaves, and forest debris to construct a sheltered hideout in the woods — a primal, creative engineering challenge that gives children an enormous sense of achievement and ownership.

The Essentials

  • Only use dead, fallen wood rather than breaking live branches, since living trees are more fragile and harder to work with anyway
  • Build the frame first with a few sturdy long branches leaned against a tree or each other, then layer smaller material on top
  • Check for stability by gently shaking the frame before adding weight or decoration, since a collapsing den can hurt small children
  • Choose a flat, dry spot away from slopes, water, or dead trees that could fall (widowmakers)
  • Leave the site as you found it when you're done, dismantling the den and scattering materials back into the forest floor
