Spotting & Counting Game

Spotting & Counting Game

Min number of participants 2
Age 5+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 10 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Players pick an easy-to-spot sight — red cars, cows, out-of-state plates, motorcycles — and tally how many they see during the trip. Whoever has the highest count at the finish or a set landmark wins.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Agree on a target before you start: red cars, cows, out-of-state plates, motorcycles, dogs, water towers — anything easy to spot from where you're walking or riding.
  • Every player counts sightings for themselves, calling each one out loud so no one can dispute it later.
  • Set an end point in advance — a set amount of time, a landmark, or the end of the trip.
  • Whoever has the highest count when time's up wins that round; start a new target for the next one.

Tips

  • Pick a target that's common enough to keep things active but not so common the count becomes meaningless.
  • On a long walk, switch targets every 15–20 minutes to keep it fresh.
  • For younger kids, use colors or simple shapes (anything red, anything round) instead of specific objects.
