Minefield Game

Minefield Game

Min number of participants 2
Age 8+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Recommended
Min duration 15 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Scatter obstacles across a room, blindfold one partner, and guide them through the "minefield" using only your voice — a trust and communication exercise that's harder than it sounds.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Scatter soft, low obstacles (cones, cushions, cups, rolled towels) randomly across an open room or lawn — nothing sharp, hard, or breakable.
  2. Pair up; one partner puts on a blindfold and stands at one edge of the field.
  3. The sighted partner stays outside the field and gives only verbal directions — no touching, no walking alongside.
  4. The blindfolded partner must cross to the other side, guided step by step (“small step left,” “stop,” “step forward”) while avoiding every obstacle.
  5. Touching an obstacle costs a point or restarts that pair's attempt (agree on the rule beforehand); the fastest clean or lowest-penalty crossing wins.

Tips

  • Walk the blindfolded partner through the layout once with eyes open first if it's a new group, so nerves settle before the real run.
  • Keep obstacles genuinely soft and low to the ground — this game only works safely if bumping into something is a non-event, not a hazard.
  • Short, consistent commands work far better than long sentences; agree on a simple vocabulary before starting (left, right, forward, stop, small step).
  • Great for team building: it's a fast, one-on-one trust exercise, and running several pairs at once shows clearly which duos communicate best under pressure.
