Two lines of people balance a light rod on their extended index fingers and must lower it to the ground together — the tricky part is it keeps rising instead, teaching coordination under pressure.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Split into two facing lines of 6-10 people each, everyone holding out one index finger at waist height.
  2. Lay a light, straight rod (a tent pole or a length of thin PVC pipe works well) across everyone's fingers, resting on top.
  3. Every finger must stay in constant contact with the rod throughout — no gripping, no pinching it between fingers.
  4. The group's task is to lower the rod together to the ground.
  5. The rod famously tends to rise instead, because each person's finger unconsciously pushes up to stay in contact — the group succeeds when it finally reaches the floor, resting on every finger the whole way down.

Tips

  • Go slowly and let one person call a very slow countdown; rushing makes the rod shoot upward faster.
  • If the rod is climbing, it usually means everyone is pushing up slightly at once — try having everyone consciously relax their finger pressure rather than pushing down harder.
  • A stiff, ultra-lightweight rod (like a tent pole) works far better than anything with any flex or weight.
  • Great for team building: it looks absurdly simple but reveals how a group's individual, well-intentioned reflexes can work against a shared goal unless everyone consciously coordinates.
