Take turns throwing metal boules to land as close as possible to a small wooden cochonnet on gravel or dirt — pétanque is France's favourite leisurely competition, played anywhere a flat surface can be found and endlessly sociable.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Throw all your boules from within a small circle drawn or placed on the ground, keeping both feet inside it until the ball leaves your hand, since stepping outside the circle during a throw makes that throw invalid.
  • Throw the jack (the small target ball) between 6 and 10 meters away before the round starts, since a jack thrown outside this range must be re-thrown according to standard rules.
  • Only the team with boules closest to the jack scores points, earning one point for each of their boules that is closer than the opposing team's nearest boule, since points are awarded by proximity, not by total boules thrown.
  • Alternate turns between teams based on whose boule is currently farthest from the jack, since the team that's losing the point always throws next until they either take the point or run out of boules.

Tips

  • Choose between rolling your boule smoothly along the ground (pointing) or throwing it in an arc to land directly on target (lobbing), since ground conditions and obstacles often make one technique far more reliable than the other.
  • Aim to knock an opponent's boule out of position (shooting) when your team is losing the point and pointing won't get you close enough, since a well-placed shot can displace their boule and dramatically shift who's winning.
  • Study the terrain before throwing, since slopes, bumps, and loose gravel affect how a boule rolls far more than in a sport played on a flat, uniform surface.
  • Play with boules matched to your hand size and preferred weight, since a boule that's too heavy or too light for you makes it much harder to control both distance and precision consistently.
