Draw and discard decorated tiles to build a winning hand of sets and pairs before your opponents, reading the table to block rivals and anticipate what they need — mahjong combines memory, probability, and sharp attention to the discards of three opponents in a four-player game steeped in centuries of tradition.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Four players each start with 13 tiles drawn from the shuffled set, which includes numbered suits, honor tiles, and sometimes bonus tiles.
  2. Players take turns drawing one tile and discarding one, trying to build a winning hand of sets (typically four sets of three or four matching/sequential tiles, plus one pair).
  3. If another player discards a tile you need to complete a set, you may claim it by calling out the matching action (pung for three of a kind, kong for four, chow for a run, depending on the ruleset) instead of waiting for your own draw.
  4. Claiming a discarded tile interrupts the normal turn order, so play continues from the player who claimed it.
  5. A complete winning hand is declared as mahjong, ending the round immediately.
  6. Score the hand based on the sets and tiles used (higher-value combinations score more), then shuffle and deal a new round.
