License Plate Game

License Plate Game

Age 7+ yrs.
Safety support by adult Not required
Min duration 10 min.
Cost None (Free)
Environment Indoor / Outdoor

Spot license plates on passing cars and either collect as many different states, provinces, or countries as you can, or use the letters on a plate to build a word or phrase before the next one goes by.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Pick a version before you start: the collecting version (spotting plates from different states/provinces/countries) or the word version (building a word or phrase from a plate's letters).
  • For collecting: keep a running list and call out each new state, province, or country the moment you spot it — first to reach an agreed number wins, or just see how many you collect by the end of the trip.
  • For word-building: read the letters on a passing plate and race to shout a real word or phrase using those letters in order (e.g. "KTL" becomes "Kite").
  • Only plates on other vehicles count — no cheating with a phone or map.

Tips

  • Print or sketch a simple checklist of states/provinces beforehand so everyone can mark them off.
  • On long highway stretches, out-of-state and out-of-country plates turn up more often — a good time to play the collecting version.
  • Give bonus points for spotting a rare or far-away plate.
  • Keep the word-building version light-hearted — silly or funny phrases count too, not just proper words.
