Environment Outdoor

Launch and steer a kite in an open field or beach — a simple, meditative activity combining fresh air with the satisfying challenge of keeping a kite aloft and manoeuvring it in shifting wind.

The Essentials

Rules

  • Fly only in open areas well away from power lines, roads, and buildings.
  • Check that wind speed is moderate; very light wind won't lift the kite, and strong gusts can make it hard to control or damage it.
  • Never fly a kite during a thunderstorm or when lightning is nearby, since the line can conduct electricity.
  • Keep enough distance from other kite flyers to avoid tangled lines.

Tips

  • Stand with your back to the wind and let out line gradually as the kite catches air, rather than running to launch it.
  • Use a kite matched to the wind conditions; larger kites need less wind, smaller ones handle stronger gusts better.
  • Attach the bridle and tail correctly before flying, since an unbalanced kite will spin or dive instead of climbing.
  • Wind gloves or wrap the line around a handle to avoid cuts from fast-moving string.
  • Check the kite and line for damage before each flight, and repair small tears with tape before they get worse.
