Cultivate vegetables, herbs, and flowers in a garden bed, raised plot, or containers — gardening grounds you in seasonal rhythms, rewards planning and observation, and produces fresh food and beauty in a space you have shaped yourself.

The Essentials

Choose a spot that matches your plants' light needs (most vegetables and flowers want at least 6 hours of direct sun) and prepare the soil by loosening it and mixing in compost for better drainage and nutrients. Plant seeds or seedlings at the depth recommended on the packet, spacing them so mature plants won't crowd each other. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage roots to grow downward, rather than a light sprinkle every day, and water at the base rather than over the leaves to reduce disease risk. Pull weeds regularly while they're small and easy to remove, and watch for pests or discoloration so you can address problems early. Most plants benefit from a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
