Apply intricate temporary designs to skin using natural henna paste — a centuries-old tradition from South Asia and North Africa that turns hands and arms into living canvases.

The Essentials

  • Only ever use natural, plant-based henna paste, since so-called 'black henna' often contains chemical dyes that can cause serious skin reactions and burns.
  • Clean and lightly exfoliate the skin before applying, since oils and lotions block the paste from staining evenly.
  • Hold the cone like a pen and apply steady, light pressure, since squeezing too hard makes thick, blobby lines that are hard to control.
  • Let the paste dry completely, usually a couple of hours, before touching it, since smudging wet paste ruins the design and stains unevenly.
  • Keep the design covered or undisturbed as long as possible, since the longer the paste stays on skin, the darker and longer-lasting the stain becomes.
  • Avoid water on the area for several hours after removing the dried paste, since the stain keeps deepening in color for a day or two afterward.
