Cut and arrange ceramic tiles, glass, or stone tesserae into pictures and patterns set in adhesive and grouted — mosaic art is an ancient decorative craft that transforms broken materials into durable, vivid artworks for walls, pots, and garden features.

The Essentials

Steps

  1. Sketch your design on the base surface first, or work with a printed template underneath if using a transparent or translucent base like glass.
  2. Cut or break your tesserae (tile pieces) to the sizes needed, using tile nippers for ceramic or glass and wearing eye protection throughout.
  3. Arrange the pieces on the design dry first without adhesive, adjusting spacing and placement until you're happy with the layout.
  4. Glue the tesserae down one section at a time, working from the center outward or from the most detailed areas first to maintain accuracy.
  5. Let the adhesive cure fully according to the product's instructions before grouting, since grouting over uncured adhesive can shift pieces.
  6. Apply grout over the entire surface, pressing it into every gap, then wipe away excess before it fully hardens, followed by a final polish once dry.

Tips

  • Keep grout lines consistent in width throughout the piece, since uneven spacing is one of the most common signs of a beginner mosaic.
  • Work on a rigid, stable base material like plywood or cement board, since flexible bases can crack the mosaic later.
  • Save irregular or oddly shaped tesserae for edges and corners, where they're easier to fit than in the main body of the design.
  • Wear a dust mask when cutting tile or breaking ceramic, since fine particles from cutting can be harmful to inhale.
  • Seal outdoor mosaics with an appropriate weatherproof sealant, since unsealed grout and tiles can crack or discolor from freeze-thaw cycles and UV exposure.
