Creating large-scale spray-painted murals in designated spaces — combining bold lettering, vibrant color, and urban expression to transform blank walls into public art.

The Essentials

  • Practice on legal walls or designated free-art spaces first, since painting on private property without permission is vandalism and can carry real fines.
  • Sketch your design on paper before touching a wall, since planning proportions and letterforms in advance saves paint and prevents lopsided pieces.
  • Hold the can eight to twelve inches from the surface and keep it moving, since staying still in one spot causes drips and uneven coverage.
  • Build up thin layers rather than one heavy coat, since thin coats dry faster and give you more control over line weight.
  • Work from background to foreground, filling large areas first before adding outlines and details, so later mistakes don't ruin work you've already finished.
  • Wear a respirator mask and work in ventilated spaces, since spray paint fumes are far more concentrated than typical household paint.
