Match and extend a chain of rectangular tiles divided into two halves, each bearing zero to six pips, blocking opponents and emptying your hand first to score — dominoes is one of the world's most widely played games, simple enough for any age, deep enough for serious competitive play.

The Essentials

How to play

  1. Shuffle the tiles face down and have each player draw a hand (7 tiles for two to four players).
  2. The player with the highest double (or highest tile) plays first, placing it in the middle.
  3. Players take turns adding a tile to either end of the layout so the touching ends match in number of pips.
  4. If you can't play, draw from the remaining tiles until you get one you can play, or pass if the pool is empty.
  5. A double is placed crosswise and can be played on from either side, sometimes even branching the layout.
  6. The round ends when a player uses all their tiles ("domino") or no one can move; the winner scores the pips left in opponents' hands.
